Hydration

There is so much information out there on the importance of drinking enough water. As I am sure most of you know water is needed for many important functions in our body. Our bodies consist of up to 75% water, meaning that for optimum wellness we need to consume plenty of fresh quality water daily.

Water has so many amazing benefits to your health and wellness.

Here are a few:

  • Increasing energy
  • Detoxification – flushing out those toxins
  • Improves skin complex
  • Improves digestion & prevents constipation
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Reduces fatigue
  • Helps in weight reduction & appetite
  • Improves brain function
  • Balances body pH & body fluids

We all know we need water to survive but the question I get the most is how on earth am I to consume the recommended 2 – 3L of water daily? Or it’s hard when I’m not used to it, it’s boring and the top complaint…  I spend the whole day in the bathroom when I drink that much water.

So let’s look at this from a completely different angle. I am not going to ask you to drink 2L of water today, unless of course that is already a habit of yours in which case you are already on top of today’s focus and you can look into the BOOST below.

For those of you who are not meeting their 8 -10 glasses of water per day and can only manage a glass or 2 of water a day at the moment. We are going to focus on adding 1 extra glass today to your intake. EASY HUH!!! Only 1 extra glass!

However there are some points to make about this glass of water.

  • It needs to be filtered or spring water
  • It should be room temperature
  • You must not chug it down, you need to drink it at a slower pace.

This way of increasing your water should not find you running to the bathroom all day. Your body will adapt to the slow increase in water. This is going to be a daily focus point, so we will be slowly increasing this extra glass a day every few days until you are comfortably meeting your body’s water requirements.

It is my strong belief that it is really important to start your day right so my first tip would be to add your first extra glass of water in the morning when you wake up! This will help to hydrate your brain and be the best start to your day.

However a word of warning… You will start to feel amazing! Your body will crave water and you will no longer find it a horrible chore to drink your daily water quota.

If you are a little forgetful when it comes to drinking your water, firstly dehydration will do that to you *wink* moving along now….

Here are some tips that you can use to help you to make drinking your water become a fun daily habit…

★ Drink your water out of a lovely glass, unique glass bottle or container. I find that if you love your water vessel it makes it easier to remember to drink that water.

★ Set an alarm on your phone – this can really help at the beginning, set your alarm to indicate that you must go get yourself a glass or jug of water and it has to be finished before the next alarm goes off.

★ Put a jug of water on your desk at work or in a place that you spend a lot of time, seeing it will remind you to pour a glass.

★ Get a friend involved! Remind each other every time you walk past their desk at work, or send FB messages to check in and see how the other one is going.

★ Set a challenge, doing this with a friend or group can make this extra fun but solo works too! For the challenge decide what your goal is and set some rewards for meeting those goals and some penalties for if you don’t. These might be that if you meet all your water goals for the day that you get to watch your favourite show on TV tonight instead of cleaning the oven or you might choose that if you drink all your water for the week that you treat yourself to a massage. On the other hand if you don’t meet your goals you might fine yourself $20 (money to only be used to celebrate your successes or to donate to a worthy cause such as a country with dirty water). You get the gist!!

★ Create a trigger habit, for example every time you get up to go to the bathroom you must drink some water or every time you check your phone or your kids say ‘mum, I’m hungry’ lol pretty much something that happens regularly throughout your day!

★ Make it super delicious so you can’t wait to get your hands on that water all day long!!! I have added some ways to do this below.

But what if you find water boring? Here are a few fun additions to make it more exciting.

  • Add a squeeze/dash of orange, lemon, lime juice or cranberry juice.
  • Add some frozen berries, apple, watermelon, pineapple or cut grapes to your glass
  • Add some bruised mint, lemongrass, lavender, cinnamon, basil or your favourite herb.
  • Pop 1 or 2 slices of fresh ginger, cucumber or citrus into your glass or jug.
  • Add a few rose petals or sprinkle of edible flowers to your water (make sure they are edible first though)
  • Pop a date into your glass for a sweeter taste.

Just to name a few!
